Iowa National Guard commanders would be required to report incidents of sexual assault involving troops to civilian law enforcement officials under a bill being introduced in the Senate with the support of veterans’ activists.
State Sen. Steve Sodders, D-State Center, said Tuesday he has drafted the legislation in response to concerns that sexual assault can occur while Iowa troops are training or involved in other state duty, but the incidents aren’t investigated by either civilian or military authorities.
“This should have been done a long time ago,” said Sodders, a longtime Marshall County sheriff’s deputy ... Sodders appeared at a Statehouse news conference with Miyoko Hikiji of Urbandale ... and retired Army Reserve Col. Robert Krause, president of the Veterans National Recovery Center.
