DOD Invites Breaking Iraq Author to Workshop Participation
Book subject of Post-Conflict Policing in Program
Retired U.S. Army Col. Ted Spain, co-author of Breaking Iraq: the Ten Mistakes that Broke Iraq has been invited to participate in a workshop co-sponsored by the Dept. of Defense and other governmental agencies concerned with post conflict governance on April 30 and May 1st. Col. Spain will be speaking on May 1st providing the Operational Commander’s Perspective.
Col.Spain commanded the 18th Military Police Brigade in Iraq during the invasion of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the year following in Baghdad. His book Breaking Iraq which has been praised by many officers in the military for his forthrightness, focuses on the mistakes made in the initial planning of the invasion and the failure to provide for occupied citizen security. Spain has also been praised for his honesty in accepting responsibility for his own failures in Breaking Iraq which he wrote as a suggestive to those who may someday find it necessary, in the fast changing world, to plan another occupation.
Since publication of Breaking Iraq on March 19, 2013, Col. Spain has received numerous speaking engagements most recently at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia where he spoke on Leadership, the subtext of Breaking Iraq. “You are the leaders of tomorrow,” he told the cadets ”You will be leaders in the Army, Marines, Air Force and Navy and your owe it to the men and women serving under you complete concern for their welfare and their lives and the respect you get from them can only be earned. And you must be ready to tell those commanding you what they must hear, not what they would like to hear.”
