Little Bighorn Survivor Confirmed
Remember Jack Crabb, the Dustin Hoffman character who “survived” the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Little Big Man? Turns out he was a real guy. Only his name was Frank Finkel, and just as in the movie he escaped-through a bit of blind luck-the battle on a runaway horse. At least one report says he was sighted in Chicago almost 20 years later.
In Custer Survivor, author John Koster, who received a prestigious Sigma Delta Chi/Society of Professional Journalists public-service journalism award for his coverage of the American Indian Movement (his first book was The Road to Wounded Knee), tracks Finkel through authenticated reports from the field and other extant evidence, and traces his post-battle adventures and prosperities. The Library Journal calls the book a “well-written and carefully reasoned argument” and “essential reading for scholars and students of the West ...” We call it a good time spent on a good read.
